Put The "Killah" back on...
I have been out of the scene for a minute. I had to get back in but I needed a fix that would bring me back to the essence. Sept.22, in the pouring rain me and a few friends set out to the Nokia Theater to see M1 (one half of dead prez), DJ Premier (one-half of GangStarr),Papoose, Slick Rick and Ghostface Killah from the mighty Wu-Tang Clan. That line-up alone is pure hip-hop minus 1 that I am having trouble dealing with. I will get into it later. I got there in time considering we left late. BTW Nokia Theater is official if U ever in NYC, much better than SOBs (no offense but that club is too small)
On the way to I was debating with a friend. DJ Premier is wack now cause he hadn't made a good tune in a minute. I did eat my words cause as he played his greatest hits I was reminded why he could afford to chill. He has done it all. Worked with all the greats from BIG,Jay to Nas. Creating classic songs for virtual unknowns like Group Home, Big Shug and M.O.P. (No disrespect to M.o.P. but without Premier they would low on everyones radar.) I can't front for a minute I missed Gang Starr. Premier hats off!!! (No brokeback.)
M1 was real good. go cop the album. much better than I anticipated. Everyone must listen to the movement that his crew is bringing. RBG'z!!!
I really came to see the Ruler, Slick Rick. Why? He is the true ruler. I waited almost 7 years to see him perform due to the unfair incarceration. If there ever was a crown he wore it first and handed it down to as he would say "bums". If you were around in the late 80's and early 90's you wanted to be him or around him. His sharpness was evident from the flow, witiness, lyrics, delivery and even style. Just FRESH!!! Even down to the socks he made sure that presentation was on point. If you don't know La-di-da-di go under a rock. Today's greats emulated their style off of him. Think of Jay's "The ruler's back" on the Blueprint or Nas' "Build and Destroy" on Stillmatic. Nonetheless his performance was great. (I may be biased)
I almost forgot Papoose performed. I think that he is a talent. he is a bit creative but definitely overated. NYC needs new talent but I think Saigon or Tru-Life have more to offer. Kay Slay did his thing to make him known he is now signed to Violator Mangament with prospective to sign a really good deal. BTW lyrically the single "get right" is weak. As he got on stage, intentionally I went to handle some business and I could hear Papoose all the way to the restroom. In the lobby by the bar there was a huge Screen television with him performing I couldn't escape. That would have been nice if I didn't want to miss anything. But I DID!!!
Getting back, A week earlier, I had to reaquaint myself with Ghost so I flooded my ears with all of his material on my Ipod. I gotta say that I played myself by saying the Pretty Tony was his best album. But Iron Man, Supreme Clientel was dope too. I am buggin. Anyway's it was great preparation cause he must have performed 40 songs that night. most of his classics minus the guest-stars: CherChez La Ghost, Shimmy Shimmy Ya(Tribute to ODB), Wu Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing to F__ with, Ice Cream, Rmix forFreakin by Jodeci, Run, Be Easy. His line up was nonending. I have new respect for dude. I thought he would have to bring out special guests to liven his set but he and Theodore Unit held the crowd down. The Wu fans were in the building and if they aren't they are now. A very mixed crowd too. I am glad he put the "Killah" back on his name cause he murdered it.
Lastly Shout out to Wifey's Grandma that passed away. RIP

Yo sun! I cant belive that you aint brought me to the concert. But it's all good. Glad to hear ghost-dini is still doin his thing. Of course Ricky-D is "the" Ruler & I second that emotion on the Papoose overhype. I think the reason why he is getting so much visability right new is because he knows the right people and the talent pool in NY is at an all-time low right now...
He'll always be a killah and I'm glad he's again proud of it .. not living anywhere near where he might appear, Im left with devouring Fishscale, which gets better every time I play it
